Amy,
Normally, when using Revised Nomenclature, which is what is in Past
Perfect, anything that is a part of something (i.e. leg of a chair) is
classified under chair. The instructions for Nomenclature include the
following information on this subject.

"...the fact that a museum specimen is just a part or fragment of
something else should not affect the object term. Just as the leaf or
branch or flower of a Rhododendron cinnabarinium is referred to without
special notice that it is a part of the plant, so a hammer handle or a
pot fragment or the upholstery accessory for a vacuum cleaner should be
indexed using the object term that refers to the whole."

If however, you still feel that a separate term is more appropriate for
you collection and use, then you will need to add it to the list. In
Past Perfect you can do this from the Setup menu.

Before you add a word to the list determine what is the USE of the
items. Nomenclature is based on the use of an object and must be
considered before adding new terms. If the objects are samples you may
want to add a term(s) under documentary artifacts, if they are parts of
furniture you may want to add the term(s) under furniture, if they are
part of the manufacturing process then you may want to add the term(s)
there, or you may need some combination of these areas.

To add a term to the list you will want to review "adding object Terms
to Nomenclature" in the nomenclature text. If you do not have this let
me know. I will be happy to send it to you.

I hope this helps.
Tracie

Subject: What object names to list miscellaneous furniture components as
in pastperfect?

We have been working on a furniture heritage project with many objects
that
exhibit the furniture making process. It includes examples of
die-cutting, laser-
cutting wood pieces as well as decorative carving components, cabinet
and
drawer faces, and also drawer pulls. We have encountered problems with
finding an appropriate place to put these types of items within the
PastPerfect
lexicon. There is a "worked wood" option under unclassifiable objects,
but we
believe this is not appropriate. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
