Hi Kathleen,
We are located in the city of Tempe, Arizona. The Tempe Police Department gives out grants for community scholarships funding summer activities for "at risk" youngsters (from low income families) For the last several years, we've received grants of about $2,000 to cover camp fees. After receiving the grants, we contact "at risk" schools and teachers from these schools, asking them for recommendations of young people who would enjoy camp. They give us names and we send the information to families who then can sign their youngsters up free of charge. This has worked well, but sometimes these kids accept the scholarship and then can't get transportation to camp.

Another museum in our system asks individuals and organizations for donations for scholarships. Community organizations fund dozens of camp spots for the Arizona Historical Society Museum in Tucson. They have a great camp and many of the kids who attend are on scholarships.

Please excuse cross-postings

As an inner city art museum, we are looking for ways to attract a more diverse summer camp population to our programs. Prices we charge to cover the cost of our camps might seem prohibitive to some so we would like to implement a summer camp scholarship program and would like to know of others in the field who have attempted this.

How have you implemented this program and what are the guidelines you use when considering applicants? Any information or guidance on this issue would be appreciated, thanks.
