Middle-aged people can help decipher without looking it up--Minerva was the
goddess of wisdom of ancient Greece, hence the wise owl imagery.   The writer
was lamenting that by the time we accumulate some wisdom, it is very late in
the day(s) of life.
Age doesn't help identify the author, though, even if once known...
