Tracy,
I found the best source of advice to be an immigration lawyer (although this
is really costly). Immigration help lines on either side of the border didn't
help much, even when it came to things like which house plants I could bring
with me!!! (I left them all behind.) I'm currently here on a student visa,
but with my GIS training, I hope that I will qualify for one of the trade
NAFTA jobs upon graduation. The NAFTA visa has some advantages and
disadvantages. The bad thing is that it's VERY temporary...renewable every
year (that's really bad if you're moving quite far from the border and aren't
likely to get back to Canada too often). The good things are that if you
qualify and have a person willing to hire you, then there's little waiting
time. The H1-B visa is another story...it took a friend of mine nearly three
months to get it, but it's for three years, renewable for another three. In
all cases, you need to find someone to hire you, without actively job hunting
(weird, but that's legally what you have to do). If you bring in a spouse
under your visa, they aren't legally allowed to work. That's about it...hope
it helps.

Charlotte
