Thank you for the advice, Lucy! I'd like to clarify your point about suffixes as I haven't used a system like that before. Would the decimal number be coded -- in my case maybe .1 for 3D, .2 for photographs, .3 for stereographs, etc. -- or something different? Another issue with the collection is that parts of sets have been alternately differentiated with decimal and alpha suffixes (to what extent I'm not yet sure).

I would assume that the suffix is then applied to the artifact as part of its number. How would that be different from renumbering everything? Or would the suffix just be a PastPerfect-only code?

Beginning a trinomial system is on my agenda, but it will take some persuasion on my part to make it happen. This situation will definitely give me more ammunition, though!
