We give our members advance notice of such events, so that they can purchase their tickets early. If they don't do it by the time they go on sale to the public, then they have to pay full price. We also advertise "advance notice" as one of our member benefits. It's a bit easier than keeping track of member discounts and comps, although we do those as well.

You could also try a "members-only" purchase period for popular, limited-seating events. Members get both a reduced price and the chance to buy tickets before they are open to the general public to buy.

What about offering members a reduced admission? We are doing that
with upcoming event - Colonial Wedding. Admission is $7, or $5 for
members -- it represents a shift from all events being "free" to
members.
