The DAR Museum is the only American decorative arts museum in our nation's capital. Its unique collection includes over 30,000 examples of decorative and fine arts. The museum's 31 period rooms reflect diverse aspects of domestic life in America from an early eighteenth-century New England hall to an 1850's whaling station in Monterey, California. The two galleries feature displays of silver, ceramics, glass, paintings and furniture, as well as special temporary exhibitions about twice a year.

Past interns have worked on projects in a number of different areas, including curatorial research, education and public programs, collections management, and public relations. I have included some of the current projects available. This list is updated frequently, however, so please feel free to contact our office for further options, or for more in-depth information about a particular topic that interests you.

To apply to the program, please send a cover letter detailing your areas of interest and a current resume. If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at (202) 879-3341 or [log in to unmask]
Sincerely,

DAR Museum
Prospective Internship Projects
Updated 7/11/2006

Education/Public Programs/Research

	*	Development of slide programs providing themed overviews of the DAR collections. These programs will be included in the Correspondent Docent Program slide offerings. Possible updating of existing slide programs may be needed as well as work with curators on slide scripts. Each program should run about 20-30 minutes when completed.

	*	Research and creation of specialized tours using museums collection or upcoming exhibitions. This Includes working with curators on tour script and object research. Would also learn about tour and visitor learning techniques. Tours will be given by interns and staff.
	*	Devise a "Trunk Kit" for the DAR Museum Colonial Traveling Trunk. The Kit should have lesson plans, activities, and list of hands-on objects needed and how to procure them. The current trunk is designed for grades 4-6 in the DC, MD, and VA area to support Colonial America and the American Revolution studies. A least one Kit should be created for each state so research is needed on each state's SOL for use by schools, and should include various teaching strategies for diverse learners.
	*	Creation of a Colonial slide program based on the DAR Museum Colonial Traveling Trunk. This program should include 50 slides of objects from the DAR collection and a 2-3 scripts on different topics for Correspondent Docents to use in schools. The script should include Visual Thinking Strategies and other inquiry methods.
Other projects may be available, please contact the museum at 202-879-3341 or [log in to unmask]
