I think there may be businesses, including museums, that are using Sept 11
as an excuse. However, there are others that were severely struggling (but
expecting to hang in there) for whom the sudden loss of commerce was the
final straw. They were trying to slog along awaiting an upswing (fall
colors, the return of school groups, a new exhibit), only to have revenue
plummet.

I suspect one outcome of the bombings will be a lot of borderline businesses
going under. Whether they were struggling due to poor management, poor
economy, poor luck, or whatever, they just don't have any reserve to tide
them over this crisis and are being weeded out. Think natural selection. A
mediocre genotype can survive a fair bit of stress, but will be the one to
founder when the wolves attack.
