Generally, public funding agencies, national and state, REQUIRE that
organizations receiving grants use their logos on all publicity and
educational materials. Sometimes, they specify size and placement, too. Not
using the logo just isn't an option. And I, for one, have no objection to
that. I'm grateful for the support, and I think it often adds prestige to an
arts organization, particularly a small one, to have that connection with a
selective public funder. The logo itself is a quick, graphic,
visually-oriented way to convey information, so I don't see the objection
there at all.

And even though I'm politically quite sceptical of the growing corporate
control of American culture, etc., etc., I have no problem with
acknowledging corporate support of a project quite loudly and proudly
(including logos) AS LONG AS the project was chosen and developed without
corporate censorship or control of the message. Yes, there's the rub, and
that requires clear and explicit mission statements by the institution,
careful oversight of those principles, and curatorial and educational
freedom within the mission parameters. Was all that present with Coke at the
Library of Congress? I can't tell from here.
