A book with much wisdom on this topic is "Interpretation of Historic
Sites" by Alderson and Low,  from AASLH (now from Altamira Press).  The
book's differentiation between documentary,  representative and
aesthetic sites immediately provides a tool for ways and means of
understanding goals and dealing with authenticity of these different
types of historic sites.
