Thanks for bringing this up.  

Bad as gas prices and the generally dismal economy
seem to be, the STAYCATION idea is a natural for
museums and sites in metropolitan areas.

Some time-honored approaches come to mind.  Partnering
with local corporations to sponsor free (or reduced
admission price) days and approaching local
foundations  for sponsorship of field trips by day
care centers and
summer school programs (typically heavily used summer
resources for low income families.)  Open
communications with local government and social
services providers to see if there are programs your
museum can fit into.  


Here's a Memorial Day thought for all Museum-L'ers --
America's libraries and museums helped this country 
get through the Great Depression and WW2; there are
some lessons from the past that it would be worth
recalling to help today's cultural institutions to do
it.
