I second Doug's assessment without hesitation. WWI ushered in radical changes and changed the geo-political landscape so dramatically that the repercussions are still felt today. 

The only item to rival the scope of its effects in this decade is the computer, which continues to alter the economy, individual interaction and the social dynamic.
