OK now I will get in on this, My memory from my days in classes at Museum school and also working in NY and other states, I think that depending on the state, you have to "make every effort" to find and document the loan/donation if there is no paperwork. Also, if the museum is a state entity there are even other rules. You might want to check the legal end of this problem. I had a question on my orals in school about this in the mid 80s and this, at that time, was the accepted answer. Hope this helps, hope you get it resolved.

Susannah,

While I am not 100% sure (and maybe someone else can
correct me on this) but I believe that there is a time
limit on situations such as this one.

In other words, if neither the donor/lender or museum
has documented proof of the donation/loan but the
organization has had the item for a number of years it
is officially the museum's property because the
organization has been caring for it for such a long
period of time. This would make it impossible for a
descendant to claim ownership of the said item.
