On a resume, how should you define a volunteer job? I have 20+ years
experience volunteer experience in museums, doing such various things as
cataloging collections, helping mount exhibits, writing press releases and
interpreting pioneer crafts for school kids. When I describe these various
positions in a resume for a potential employer, I usually get the
response "you have a lot of great volunteer experience, but..." (The
implied end of this sentence being "those weren't REAL jobs.") Now that I
DO have a real job, I am constantly at loggerheads with a board of
directors that has very little understanding of how to run a museum. Their
response to me is, "Thank you for your input, but..." (the implied end of
that sentence being, "you don't know what you're talking about").
