  Harry,
When I do my trade demonstration at reenactments I do in deed get the
mixed audience and I tailor my response to the situation at hand.
It is when I am asked to do large public events that are more on the
celebration of some anniversary of a place or event that I have
encountered those looking to be entertained. Nothing wrong with that, I
just don't enjoy being the entertainment so I don't do those type of
events any more. I have the same dislike of being in art/craft shows but
then I do have bills to pay. ( wholesale may be boring production work
but I don't have to put up with unattended children and sticky finger
marks all over polished brass and copper)
I agree with you, that most visitors are much more interested in the
domestic life of the past. I thing they can relate much more readily to
cooking and working than fighting and drilling.
I said I was an "N" of one, and statically that has next to zero value.
My opinions and experiences are just that.
I was responding to David Haberstich's question; do people value the
paid experience more than the unpaid. To which I said I don't know if
they value them more or less, they do (in my experience) value them
differently.
