THE HUNTINGTON LIBRARY, ART COLLECTIONS AND BOTANICAL GARDENS

OPEN POSITION (Posted 5/28/99 to be filled as soon as possible)

BOTANICAL SCIENCE EDUCATION SPECIALIST 

POSITION: Working under the direction of the Education and Volunteer Services Manager and in close cooperation with the Director of Botanical Gardens, plans and implements new and ongoing botanical science education programs and exhibits. Works as member of intra- and inter-departmental teams to create programs and exhibits that reflect the Huntington's collections and the mission of the new Botanical Complex.  Represents the Huntington on professional committees and presents Huntington programs at professional meetings and conferences.  


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  In conjunction with Botanical Division staff, creates, implements and coordinates new and existing botanical education and exhibits programs.  Acts as botanical science education specialist on the exhibits development team for the new Botanical Center.  As such, works with designers, graphic artists, writers, and consultants in development of science education exhibits.  Coordinates all evaluation - front-end, formative and summative - for proposed new botanical programs and exhibits.  Evaluates on-going botanical facility design to match needs of educational programs.  Explores and promotes collaborative association between the Huntington and other botanical educational organizations.  Coordinates with Children and Family Programs Coordinator to create botanical science education programs.  Works with Volunteer Programs Coordinator for docent training in the garden.  Works with School Programs Coordinator to develop and implement botanical education school programs, teacher workshops and classroom materials.  Contributes to the Huntington Educational Web site.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:  Other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:  Undergraduate degree in botany, biology or related field; graduate degree, or progress toward graduate degree in education or science education highly desirable.  Demonstrated ability to teach in an informal setting or classroom situation.  Knowledge of informal learning theory and practice essential.  Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team essential.  Strong organizational skills a must.  Superior writing and oral communication skills.  Creativity and innovation.  At least three to five years experience in developing, implementing and evaluating informal science education programs and exhibits.  Experience in classroom teaching and working with the public.

THE HUNTINGTON, located about 15 miles north-east of downtown Los Angeles, was created in 1919 as an independent private library for advanced scholarly research  in English and American history and literature, combined with public art galleries and botanical gardens.  The Huntington exhibits collections of British, Renaissance, and American art, rare books and manuscripts, and 150 acres of specialized botanical gardens.  It is consulted annually by some 1,700 scholars, visited by 500,000 members of the general public, and employs approximately 300 with an annual operating budget of over $15 million.
