If anything, underwater archeology is even more sensitive to disruption of a
site. Quite often wrecks are found in clusters and cross contamination is
very likely if great care is not taken. Some of the best work in "sea
bottom" archeology has been done in the Netherlands where new polders
created wreck sites that could be accessed on land with standard
archeological techniques. Also, there are some very stringent laws that are
involved in the various states. Caveat.

Subject: treasure hunting [student question]

A friend of mine, a diver, recently approached me about off shore treasure
diving in Florida. Usually as someone in archeaology, I am opposed to
untrained
treasure hunting because it destroys historical context, but I am not sure
how
to feel about this. Isn't it already out of its historical context if it is
on
the bottom of the sea? Does anyone know if objects found in this manner are
accepted by museums?
