The following is extracted from a mailing I received today from
the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy --
merely as a FYI. I would like to ask, though, that other
folks from other states with proposed cuts to the arts and
humanities post relevant information regularly about these
funding issues. Everyone needs to be aware of what is going on.

"Governor Allen has amended the state budget to eliminate ALL
funding for the Virginia Foundation beginning July 1, 1995.
The General Assembly will begin debating the Governor's budget
amendments on January 11th. Without state funding, which
provides 25% of the Foundation's budget, VFH will suffer
devastating cuts in community programs statewide. About 1/2 of
our programs and the Virginia Association of Museums, which
receives 50% of its operating budget from VFH, depend on the
state appropriation."
and.....
"VFH faces another challenge in the coming weeks. Many members
of the new 104th Congress favor major cuts or complete
elimination of the National Endowment for the Humanities
(NEH). VFH receives about 45% of its funding from NEH,
including matching dollars for funding received from the
Commonwealth and private sources......Gubernatorial, General
Assembly and Congressional support for the humanities, the VFH,
and NEH has always been bipartisan."
