I think the question was too broad.
When we were looking for similar information a couple of years ago, we
contacted AAM, and they gave us very helpful information (and
quickly).  We also contacted similar museums around us, who helped us
with understanding regionally-specific expectations.   I emailed them
a list of specific questions, and most got back to me.

As opposed to contacting individual museums for 990s or Annual
Reports, you can also find much of what you might need on GuideStar
(will need to register, but you can get a lot of good information with
the free membership).

While we are a small museum, I don't have the budget in front of me,
and can't identify off the top of my head what the breakdown of our
funding is.  Right now, most is from in-house fundraising, admissions,
and memberships, with very little coming from grants.
