Recently, an experimental survey entitled "Questioning the museum" has been

evaluation of the state museums communicative tools helpfulness in conveying
information. In particular, the general objectives of the research were the
followings:

used by museums;
B. gathering information on the visitors' judgements about the effectiveness
of the communicative strategies adopted by museums;
C. getting guidelines about the ways to improve museums communicative
processes.

The study was carried out by account of the Ufficio Studi of the Italian
Ministero per i beni e le attivitą culturali under the supervision and the
co-ordination of Prof.
Ludovico Solima from the Seconda Universitą degli Studi di Napoli.
It has been realized on the basis of 4.000 questionnaires collected
during five weeks (30th June - 7th August 1999) in a panel of state museums.
The research has been held in the following twelve museums:
Gallerie dell'Accademia di Venezia;
Pinacoteca di Brera, Milano;
Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna;
Museo Egizio di Torino;
Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, Roma;
Museo Nazionale Romano, (Palazzo Massimo);
Museo Nazionale di S. Matteo, Pisa;
Galleria Palatina di Firenze;
Galleria Nazionale di Perugia;
Galleria Nazionale di Capodimonte;
Museo Archeologico di Reggio Calabria;
Museo Archeologico di Cagliari.

The information were collected through a questionnaire available in Italian,
English and French, made solely of multiple-choice questions since it was a
self-completion survey.
The research has focused on topics such as external and internal signage,
captions of the objects, information panels, maps, guide-books, guided
tours, audio-tours, multimedia workstations, museum staff, etc.
