The Montclair Art Museum
Position Announcement: Development Assistant
The Montclair Art Museum, located in Montclair, New Jersey, is a mid-sized
regional museum of American and Native American Art with a collection of
15,000 objects and an annual budget in excess of $2 million.

The Development Assistant is a full-time entry-level position that offers
an opportunity to become involved in all aspects of museum fund raising,
including grants, special events, membership, planned giving, prospect
research and major gifts.

The Development Assistant is an entry-level position that reports to the
Deputy Director for Institutional Advancement and works, in collaboration
with the Deputy, to organize, refine and manage programs to secure new and
upgrade existing donors. The Development Assistant is also the principal
link to the museum’s corporate supporters. Responsibilities include:

Administration Act as administrative manager for a wide variety of tasks,
including coordinating departmental meetings and projects, organizing and
maintaining files, preparing board and other reports, and assisting in the
annual budget process.

Donor Research Conduct biographical and prospect research on-line and
through library sources on a regular basis. Prepare profile sheets and
contact forms, and input data into a donor database.

Publications Work in conjunction with the Communications Department to
facilitate the design and printing of donor-related printed materials such as
the Annual Report, Planned Giving brochures, and the preparation of
Bulletin copy.

Corporate Support Serve as principal liaison with corporate supporters to
ensure a quality benefits program. Maintain ongoing relationships with staff.
Handle all requests and approvals for rentals and work with museum
facilities and curatorial staff as needed to coordinate events.

Committee Support Serve as secretary to Development, Membership and
Corporate board committees. Organize monthly meetings, prepare agendas,
write and distribute minutes.

Special Events Work with the Deputy and volunteers to produce an annual
Spring Gala and other fund raising events throughout the year. Assist on
various cultivation receptions.

Requirements
The successful candidate will have excellent writing, research and
communication skills, the ability to work well with key volunteers, staff and
trustees, be highly organized, self motivated and able to work well under
pressure. Computer literacy, especially a competency in on-line resources
and a knowledge of donor software systems is essential. Requires a B.A. in
Art History, English, or other relevant field. Successful candidates must
have poise, diplomacy, tact, the ability to work successfully with VIPs, and
represent the museum with fluency and professionalism to internal and
external constituents. Knowledge of American art is preferred but not
required.
