ALTERNATIVE REVENUE QUESTIONNAIRE FOR CRAFT ORGANIZATIONS



The following questionnaire was developed by students at the H. John
Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management, Carnegie Mellon
University as a part of a Systems Synthesis project at the Heinz School.
Second year Master of Science and Master of Arts Management students
partake in Systems Synthesis projects, which are, in essence, a group
master's thesis.  Students work together in groups, defining, analyzing,
and creating alternatives for their project.



PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS SURVEY IF YOUR ORGANIZATION IS A U.S. CRAFT
ORGANIZATION, OR IF YOUR ORGANIZATION FREQUENTLY EXHIBITS OR SELLS
CRAFTS.  Any information you supply is to is greatly appreciated.

I. RENTALS:

What is most popular kind of event your facility is rented for?

What is the capacity for stand up/ sit down events?

What is the range for fees charged to have events at your facility? Is a
contribution  or membership required?

Do you have a full-time staff person responsible for rentals?

Do you provide in-house catering?



II. BUDGET:

Is your organization's budget over or below $500,000?

What is the organizations earned to contributed income percentage?

What percentage of the budget is earned from rentals?

What percentage of the budget is earned from retail sales?

What percentage of the budget is earned from exhibition sales?



III. MEMBERSHIP:

What is your total membership?

How often do you conduct a membership survey?

What membership level has the highest number of members?

Do your membership benefits include discounts in the museum store, cafe,
or space rental?

What is your target market?

What are your membership levels (in dollar amount)?

What is your percentage retention for membership renewals?



IV. EARNED INCOME:

What are your sources of earned income?

What is the most lucrative source of earned income?

What percentage is earned from food service (monthly) within the facility?



V. RETAIL:

What is the merchandise mix for consignment vs. purchased merchandise?

What percentage is given to the artist from consignment merchandise?

What percentage of space is dedicated to retail sales?

What is the average retail sale in dollars?

How many full-time staff members are responsible for the store vs.
Volunteers employed in the store?

Do you operate satellite stores?



VI. GALLERY:

What type of media is represented in your gallery?

What are the dimensions of your gallery space?  What percentage of your

total public space?

How many exhibitions per year?

Do you have a curator on staff?

Do you use guest curators from the community?

Do you use touring exhibitions?

What percentage of national, regional, and local artists do you exhibit?

Do you have a catalogue?

Do you put prices of the works on the labels?

What is the amount of sales through exhibitions?  What percentage

commission do you take?  What is the amount of possible sales in an

exhibition?
