Museum Education Internship at Lubbock Lake Landmark

The internship in museum education, in addition to providing quality learning experiences for the intern, is vital to the Landmark’s ability to provide a wide variety of educational services.

Education and public programming at the Lubbock Lake Landmark support the following goals:
•     to create programs and an environment that provide significant learning experiences for visitors of all ages;
•     to provide creative learning experiences for students that extend beyond formal classroom instruction;
•     to provide opportunities for learning across a wide variety of disciplines and to accommodate diverse learning styles;
• to recognize the diversity of audiences and the importance of expanding the dialogue to include those audiences in both program development and presentation.

The internship is designed to expand the Museum's opportunities to offer meaningful experiences in educational programming to its graduate students, and to provide practical training and experience to enhance their classroom studies towards becoming museum professionals. It also provides the opportunity to learn that the role of a museum educator extends far beyond the narrow constraints of developing tours and programs for an institution. In return, additional personnel, providing the best possible educational and public programs to a growing visitor base, support the Landmark’s interpretive programs.

Duties are project-oriented and will include:

 * assisting with planning and implementation of public programming initiatives including workshops, tours, lectures, and off site/outreach programs
 * researching and upgrading the Landmark’s traveling trunk program
 *   developing and teaching classes and workshops throughout the year for area youth;
 * developing methods to evaluate training and public programming initiatives.
 Participation in professional development programs gives the intern the opportunity to learn about current issues relevant to the formal and informal education community. Additionally, it provides a venue to meet and network with teachers and other informal educators. Recommended conferences include: Informal Science Educators Association (early spring), and Mountain Plains Museums Association (early fall).

This is a full-time internship for a period of twelve months. University credit is available when applicable. Salary is $1,700/month plus University benefits.

Send letter of interest, resume, and contact information for three references before December 31, 2010 to: Susan Rowe, Education Program Manager, Lubbock Lake Landmark, Museum of Texas Tech University, Box 43191, Lubbock, TX 79409-3191.
