The large museum I intern at uses 16 regular blank wooden blocks with 
stick-on numbers and letters. Whenever we need to take accession photos, 
we just take the box of blocks out.  The letters and number are set on 
the blocks, which aren't square/box blocks, but rather ramp-like with 3 
sides for the stickers.

The people in collections made them for photographing objects.  Very 
inexpensive, but takes some smarts to ensure you're initially placing 
the stickers in a way that allows you to not run out of a number when it 
comes to setting the accession number for a photo.
