Thanks for all the replies, y'all. I'm broadcasting this reply to
try to save trouble for responders and bandwidth for all.
     I was aware of the USNM designation of some adopted collections at
the Smithsonian, but the source I was quoting made a clear distinction
between SI and USNM, and spoke of field biologists actively and
exclusively employed by each.
     His mistake, my embarrassment. But thanks again.
