Interesting perspective, Ross.

Here in the public universities and colleges of Georgia, our institutional presidents are required to have a Ph.D. or a J.D.D. and a distinguished record of scholarship, service, teaching, and administration. In other words, our requirements mirror the skills, abilities and training we expect from any faculty member, only more so. We expect the president to have served his or her time in the academic trenches.

Members of our boards of trustees can and often do come from the business or non-academic community.

Maybe the requirements vary in different states.
