JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

The Bronx Museum of the Arts (BxMA) seeks a Director of Education for an
innovative and expanding program serving a multi-ethnic community in the
South Bronx as well as public programs for the general public, emerging
artists, and art enthusiasts. The candidate will be responsible for the
administration, planning, and development of educational and interpretive
programs for children, family, and adult audiences. In September 2003, BxMA
will break ground on a new $10 million wing. In the following year, the
Museum plans an additional $10 million reconstruction of its existing
facility to develop larger classrooms, workshops, as well as a
student/community gallery space and expanded galleries for temporary
exhibitions and the permanent collection.

BxMA has evolved into a leading center for contemporary art within its 31
years. In this process, it has become internationally recognized as an
important venue for supporting and documenting the work emerging and under-
represented artists, particularly those of culturally diverse backgrounds,
and for its collection of works of artists of Latin American, African and
Asian ancestry as well as those from or linked to the Bronx. The Museum’s
hallmark is a fusion of community-based service with cutting edge
contemporary art and art practices that promotes cross-cultural dialogue.

As the only fine arts museum in the borough, it reaches out to one of the
most ethnically and socio-economically varied constituencies in New York
City, largely composed of African American and Latino populations, as well
as an increasing number of African, Asian, Caribbean, Central and South
American communities in the metropolitan area.

A priority for the Director of Education will be to work with the Executive
Director, Senior Curator, staff and Board committees to reach and more
effectively serve a wider Bronx community – particularly youth and families.

PROGRAM AREAS

Children’s and Family Programs
A recent Federal grant from the Small Business Administration has spurred
the expansion of museum education programs for children and families that
are fully integrated with or complementary to the Museum’s exhibitions and
collections. These programs are to be built hand in hand with local
constituents and will be driven by outcome-based goals to expand
participation of youth from the immediately surrounding community and
provide creative enrichment opportunities that can among other things lead
to job-readiness and increase knowledge of visual communication.
The children’s programs currently include:
· Interpretive Art Program (IAP) – schools tours featuring thematic
discussions and/or studio workshops lead by artist-instructors utilizing
Visual Thinking Strategy (VTS)
· Families First – thematic art making workshops for children 5 –12
and parents or caregivers that explore selected ideas and concepts explored
in the galleries
· Family Affairs – quarterly events featuring a wide range of visual
arts, new media, performances, and art-making workshops
· Collaborative partnership with Bronx International High School – a
new small high school in the South Bronx dedicated to serving students who
have lived in the US for four years or less, speaking English as a second
language
· In:Projects – on-line interpretive projects for youth audiences
featuring audio, video, graphics and textual content while expanding
greater access to electronic, graphic, network, and moving arts

· Access GALLERY – interactive public spaces that offer didactic
material (i.e. gallery and family guides) with on-line projects and art-
making activities to further explore ideas and concepts in current
exhibitions
· Student Docent Program – trains student to lead facilitated
discussions on contemporary art among visiting classes
· Teen Programs – workshops, performances, and collaborations for
teen audiences
Areas for development and future expansion include (but not limited to):
· Revitalization of student docent program
· After-school programs
· Development of a Teen Arts Council
· Artist-lead multi-session classes and sequential programs that take
place in schools and at the Museum

Artist Programs (planned in conjunction with the curatorial department)
· Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) – a seminar program for 36 selected
emerging artists providing practical guidance career development that
culminates in an annual exhibition.
· Collaborative Art Projects (CAP) – artist-lead, collaborative-based
projects with Bronx residents to create new work and/or public art
interventions
· Access Zone – seminars and workshops for working artists

Adult Programs
The Director of Education works with the curatorial staff to plan and
implement exhibition-related interpretive programs and public events for
young adult and adult audiences. They include On Point: Critical
Perspectives in Contemporary Art (lectures, seminars, and artist/curator
conversations), studio tours, Performance LAB (live-stage performances,
spoken word, music, film and video, and dance), and Bounce (blending music,
multi-media, and performance events).

Qualifications
Masters in Art History, Museum Studies, Art Education or equivalent
experience. At least 5 years in the art education field – teaching and
administration – is required. Must have history in working with public
schools, creating partnerships, as well as strong writing and public
speaking skills. Experience in grant writing are also necessary in
addition to outcome based evaluative processes and techniques. A working
knowledge of current art education practices in Internet and electronic
media is essential. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and database
software is a must. Candidate must be innovative, resourceful, and possess
interest in and knowledge of contemporary art and art practices. Fluency
in Spanish is preferable.
