Please be careful how you generalize.

Here in New York City, museum capital of the world, there are quite a few
women who are heads of museums. Some museums are highly specialized, I
admit, but others are well-established and world-renowned:

American Museum of Natural History
American Museum of the Moving Image
Americas Society, The
Asia Society and Museum
Bronx Museum of the Arts
Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Brooklyn Children's Museum
Conference House, The
Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art
Lower East Side Tenement Museum
Merchants House, The
Mount Vernon Hotel Museum and Garden
Museum of Arts and Design
Museum of Chinese in America (E.D. recently left)
Museum of the City of New York
New Museum of Contemporary Art
New-York Historical Society
New York City Police Museum (E.D. recently left)
New York Hall of Science
PS 1 Contemporary Art Center
Queens Botanical Garden
SculptureCenter
Snug Harbor Cultural Center
South Street Seaport Museum
Staten Island Botanical Garden
Staten Island Children's Museum
Staten Island Museum
Studio Museum in Harlem, The
Wave Hill

I suggest you go to the Web site for the Museums Council of New York for a
list of about 100 museums and visit their individual Web sites.
