When applying for internships in the Minneapolis several years ago I ran
into the internships only-for-credit problem - I wasn't willing or able to
pay for a credit I didn't need for the privilege of doing unpaid work,
especially as the internship would take time away from paid job. My solution
was to be a volunteer instead. My museum supervisors knew I wanted to have a
career in the field, and went out of their way to help me gain practical
experience. The title of volunteer rather than intern gave me added
flexibility. In other situations my supervisors have been more comfortable
with the title of intern. I've done internships both for credit and just for
experience. I think the key to a worthwhile experience is for both
intern/volunteer and supervisor to be clear about expectations and goals
from the start. Finally, I know from my own job/internship searches that
there are great internships out there for people recently out of school,
many of them complete with salaries and sometimes benefits.
