After doing a thesis on historic house museum interpretation, I would
suggest looking at:
Tilden, Freeman. Interpreting Our Heritage (Chapel Hill: Univ. of North
Carolina Press, 1977)(It's a classic of theory)
Alderson and Low. Interpretation of Historic Sites (Nashville: American
Association of State and Local History, 1976)(The first book on
interpretation, covers all bases)
The Good Guide (Sorry, I can't find the citation right now. Great for
planning for docents.)

AASLH has just come out with a new book:
Great Tours! Thematic Tours and Guide Training for Historic Sites.
Barbara Abramoff Levy, Sandra Mackenzie Lloyd and Susan Porter.
I haven't had a chance to look at it, but it's next on the list.
