RECORDS MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP

Genesee Country Village & Museum is seeking qualified applicants for a
records management internship in its curatorial department for the
summer of 2004.

Genesee Country Village is part of a major museum complex including a
Gallery of Wildlife and Sporting Art, a Carriage Museum, a Nature Center
and vintage baseball field. It is the largest living history museum in
New York State and one of the largest in the nation. The village
consists of 68 restored historic buildings housing approximately 15,000
collection objects dating from the late 18th through the end of the 19th
century. The museum is located in Mumford, New York, approximately 20
miles from Rochester and 45 miles from Buffalo. This region of upstate
New York is home to a large number of important museums, galleries and
historic sites.

Genesee Country Museum is seeking college juniors, seniors, graduate
students, or recent graduates of museum studies programs with some
training in and interest in managing collection records. Preference will
be given applicants who also demonstrate knowledge of a wide range of
historic materials including the domestic arts, decorative arts and
tools of various 19th century trades and professions. The intern will
work closely with the Curator of Village Collections and the Associate
Registrar to update the accession, catalog and inventory records of a
wide range of collection objects displayed in a selected number of
historic buildings. The museum employs Past Perfect Museum Software as a
collections management database. Work will focus on editing old catalog
records and recataloging when necessary. An effort will be made to give
the intern a choice of the kind of historic building he or she may be
interested in inventorying. Choices will range from dwelling houses to
trade shops and professional offices all restored to various dates
within the 19th century. Applicants should be able to work independently
and have a serious interest in a museum career as a curator, registrar
or collections/records manager.

The internship requires the investment of 40 hours per week for a total
of 10 weeks from June through August of 2004. The museum will allow
flexibility for start and ending dates with the provision that the
intern is employed no less than a total of 400 hours. A stipend of
$3,000 will be offered to the selected candidate. In addition, up to
$2,000 will be made available to help defray the costs of his or her
housing during the internship.

Those interested are encouraged to send a cover letter, resume and one
letter of recommendation by May 7 to: Dan Barber, Curator of Village
Collections, Genesee Country Village & Museum, PO Box 310, 1410 Flint
Hill Road, Mumford, NY, 14511-0310. For further information or questions
please call 585-538-6822, ext. 254 or e-mail the curator at
