There are a series of stories that seem to be told at many house museums…
The Closet tax is only one. Some of the others include quilts as flags or
markers along the underground railroad, The tunnel (or crawl space or ???)
in the basement which was part of the underground railroad, the damage to
the newel post from (usually Sherman’s) Civil War troops. All stained
glass windows become “Tiffany’s”. Corsets have gotten tighter with each
telling. Monday was the only day you did wash. Homes get older, mirrors
get thicker.

Apparently we don't let facts get in the way of "good" stories.
