You might want to contact David Lonsdale, the executive director of the
Lake Superior Center about to break ground in Duluth.

This aquarium/science center/natural history museum will focus on the
lake Superior area, which has a long maritime history as well.  In
addition, I know David and his crew visited a bunch of the Midwestern
maritime museums as a part of their planning.
