DESCRIPTION:

The Virginia Historical Society is in the final stages of
planning a fully integrated automation system and is seeking a
System Manager to be responsible for managing, planning, and
coordinating all activities related to the system and the
automation/technology needs in general for the Library, Archives,
and Museum collections.

Position provides direct oversight and management of the planned
Cuadra STAR system, which will be used for a wide range of
collection management activities and for providing bibliographic
access to collections; the exploration of possibilities for
providing services to off-site users via the Internet;
maintenance of system software; staff training; and long-range
system development, including digital imaging.  Position reports
to Associate Director for Administration.

Initial appointment is for one year, with renewal contingent on
funding.  Target start date is March 1, 1997.

DUTIES:

Responsible for the overall integrity of the automated system and
database, including development of database (created through
retrospective and original cataloging) and supervision of
adherence to descriptive standards, coordination of backup
procedures and maintenance of the system, and monitoring system
use and performance.

Provides systems analysis, system design, system development and
support including new applications, program maintenance and
modification, and problem resolution in order to enhance
functionality of applications for users.

Recommends policies regarding automation/technology and provides
technical support and training to staff and users.

Prepares budget proposals for acquisition of library technology
resources and participates in development of external funding for
automation/technology initiatives.

Serves as liaison with Network Manager and with automation
vendors.

Maintains a strong awareness of current technology and evaluates
its applicability to the library and museum functions.

REQUIREMENTS:

ALA-accredited MLS with at least two years experience using
automated library/collections management systems (preferred) OR a
degree in history, American Studies, or a related field and at
least three years experience using automated library/collections
management systems.

Substantial knowledge of principles and practices of
bibliographic control including MARC, AACR2, LCSH, and LC
classification; and other library technical services operations.

Proven organizational and interpersonal skills, including
excellent oral and written communications skills and the ability
to perceive and respond to changes in priorities as project
progresses.

SALARY:

Lower to mid-thirties, commensurate with experience.  Excellent
