THIS IS A FEDERAL POSITION

Closes: April 2, 1999                   Duty Location:  Washington, DC

The purpose of the position is to manage and supervise a successful volunteer
docent program at the Museum on the Mall and the Paul E. Garber Storage and
Restoration Facility in Suitland, Maryland.  The incumbent is responsible for
selecting and providing leadership and direction to the 150-200 docents in the
Docent Program Unit.  Develops plans for the recruitment, training, utilization,
and evaluation of the docents, and develops policies and procedures for the
effective management of the NASM docent corps.  Analyzes the future needs and
goals of the museum's tours program, the retention rate of current docents and
the financial and personnel resources required.  Develops a recruitment process,
identifying and contacting sources for potential recruits.  Develops plans for
assessing candidate potential for participation in the docent program and for
evaluating and monitoring candidates after they have been accepted into it.
Develops a comprehensive training program to educate docents about the museum's
collections and exhibitions and to enhance their knowledge of aviation and space
exploration.  As an aid to docents, develops and writes guidelines for
successfully conducting tours, presenting complex information, and handling the
special needs of a tour group.  Plans outreach efforts to attract more
culturally diverse groups to the museum for tours. Provides liaison between the
docents and the Smithsonian curators, and works with the NASM Docent Council to
convey NASM policies and procedures, hear recommendations and solve problems
relating to the Docent Program.  Supervises the Docent Program Assistant and
manages the Docent Program budget.

Selective Factors:  (Applicant must meet all of these mandatory requirements in
order to be considered qualified to compete for a position)

1.  Skill in the management of programs for the recruitment, selection,
training, and evaluation      of docents.
2.  Knowledge of the educational principles, practices, and methods used to
develop and      implement museum education programs for culturally diverse
audiences.
3.  Knowledge of the logistical, legal, and ethical issues associated with
managing volunteers.

Quality Ranking Factors:  (These factors are not mandatory to be considered for
a position, but will be used to determine who are the highest qualified
candidates among those who meet the selective factors)

1.  Skill in the management of programs for the recruitment, selection,
training, and evaluation           of docents.
2.  Knowledge of the educational principles, practices, and methods used to
develop and           implement museum education programs for culturally diverse
audiences.
3.  Knowledge of the logistical, legal, and ethical issues associated with
managing volunteers.
4.  Skill in developing docent and tour programs that support the programs and
initiatives of a      museum.
5.  Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
6.  Ability to supervise.
