I realize that oak, Douglas Fir, red cedar and other woods are not
recommended for use in the construction of cases for archival storage of art
works. However, I would be interested in using red oak to manufacture a
shadowbox enclosure for a framed 20th-c oil painting -- to make use of the
decorative look of the oak.
If all wood surfaces are 3x sealed with a latex urethane acrylic
varnish, and the interior of the box is lined with linen-over-museum board,
and the box is vented ... does anyone on the List know whether this would be
enough to prevent or reduce the outgassing to acceptable levels?
As an alternative, if the box itself were composed of poplar or birch
(both acceptable woods), yet veneered with oak on the exterior, would that
prove to be similarly harmful?

Thanks for your remarks,
Dennis Harper
