Badlands Mixes Fossils, Partners and CD-ROM
A CD-ROM produced by Badlands and a group of partners is giving users a
chance to look in on a "virtual dig." It includes a map of the fossil
resources in the National Park System, a digital tour of a portion of the
National Museum of Natural History, a field "log" for young and less-young
paleontologists to maintain, and many other activities to provide in-depth
information on the importance of protecting our fossil past. The product,
"Fossil Resources in the National Parks: Paleontology CD ROM" was a National
Park Foundation honorable mention project in the National Park Partnership
Leadership Award in education and interpretation last year. Badlands
education specialist Chris Niewold led collaborators through the production
of the CD ROM, which is targeted to reach middle and high school age
students. Partners included Badlands Natural History Association, several
parks (including Dinosaur, Petrified Forest, Fossil Butte, Florissant Fossil
Beds, Hagerman Fossil Beds, John Day Fossil Beds and Grand Canyon), Kansas
State University, South Dakota Public Television, and the National Museum
of Natural History. National Resource Protection and Preservation Funds were
the seed money for the project. The CD will be a sales item later this
year.
