I've always been told that one of the main reasons the MFA is
considered a terminal degree is because the superlative practice of the
art involved is a large part of one's proof of worthiness to be in said
profession. Most places seem to hire on the basis of one's developed
talents and teaching ability rather than on one's knowledge of theory or
published papers or conference attendence.
Also, the UK and USA can't really be compared very closely in
terms of the MA/MPhil/PhD. One thing, though: the UK has a degree higher
than the PhD : the DPhil, which is supposedly awarded on the basis of
one's outstanding post-MPhil level work.
