Lisa,

We just moved our collection in a very disorganized fashion -- unfortunately
it became disorganized because of a lack of planning time and the fact that
the boxes had to be moved quickly by a large group of people doing the
"bucket brigade" method of moving. As a result I don't have too much good
advice because of all of the things we didn't do correctly -- but I can
offer some thoughts on what we did do right that may help.

1. We did inventory the contents of the boxes, and the assign numbers to
the boxes.
2. Everything was extremely well packed and arrived safely. This is
important when you have volunteer movers. The boxes (a mix of archival and
liquor boxes, for the most part) were very sturdy.
3. The shelving system did not work for us, although we had boxes color
coded in general groups. Everything was mixed up in the new storage, which
is a pain, but not insurmountable (our collection is between 5000-6000
objects).
4. If you can't plan far in advance for the move, expect to have some
problems. Other institutions that have had the luxury of planning at least
a couple of years out, and have a designated employee to do the planning
only, have the easiest time, I think.

Best wishes,

Candace Perry
