The Design Department of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, is
searching for an Assistant Manager of Design (AMD). The Met's Design
Department encompasses Exhibition, Graphic, and Lighting design as well as is
involved in consulting on capital construction and renovation, marketing,
website, and other design projects within the institution.

Responsibilities
The Assistant Manager of Design’s (AMD) primary responsibilities include the
administrative management of a 23 person Design office, authority for the
oversight and management of departmental budgets and expenditures, assisting
the Chief Designer on the design and implementation of key special exhibition
and capital construction projects, periodic design of exhibitions and
graphics him/herself, direct oversight of Production and Technology staff
members, and other duties as assigned by the Chief Designer. The AMD is part
of the senior management team of the Design department, and advises the Chief
Designer on aesthetics, staffing, procedural, and policy issues as needed.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have: excellent communication and political skills;
demonstrable expertise in museum exhibition and/or graphic design including a
substantial portfolio of work; several years experience managing a creative,
inter-disciplinary  staff; experience in the planning, design, and
specification of substantial design and construction projects; knowledge of
museum display methods and technology; knowledge of graphic production
methods and technology; ability to oversee technology issues and planning in
a deadline-focused Macintosh environment; ability to plan and work with
budgets; and an advanced degree (MA or MFA) in an appropriate discipline.

Knowledge or abilities in any of the following areas is a plus: web
technology and design, architectural drafting using VectorWorks, or
environmental signage.
