International Japanese quilt exhibition makes the Indiana State Museum its
only Midwest stop

INDIANAPOLIS - One hundred intricate Japanese quilts will be the focus of a
new exhibit which opens at the Indiana State Museum on Oct. 16.
Contemporary Japanese Quilts features work by internationally recognized
textile artists and makes its only Midwest stop at the museum.

The exhibit, which runs through Jan. 2, 2005, was juried by the Japan
Handicrafts Instructor’s Association and is touring major cities in Japan,
Australia, Europe and the United States. Unlike American quilting that is
mostly utilitarian in nature, today’s Japanese quilting is textile art at
its finest. The artists use exquisite fabrics such as exotic silks that
add unparalleled depth to their pieces.

The Japanese were quilting garments as early as the 15th century, primarily
for added protection and comfort underneath armor. Explorer Marco Polo
reportedly first introduced quilting to Europe after one of his journeys to
Asia. American frontier women later adopted their own style by developing
the patchwork and block customs that we are familiar with today.

Contemporary Japanese Quilts was organized by the Asian Art Coordinating
Council in conjunction with Japanese collaborator Kokusai Art. The
presenting sponsor is Barnes & Thornburg with support from the Japan-
America Society of Indiana, the Arts Council of Indianapolis and the City
of Indianapolis. Additional support provided by SMC Corporation of
America, Jo-Ann Stores, Inc., Lafayette Interior Fashions and Toyota Motor
Manufacturing, Indiana.

Admission to the exhibit is included in regular museum admission - $7 for
adults, $6.50 for seniors (60 and above) and $4 for children (3-12).

Programs held in conjunction with the exhibit include a Japanese Tea
Ceremony on Oct. 24 from 2 - 5 p.m.; Japanese animated films on Oct. 20, 27
and Nov. 3 at 7 p.m.; a textile artist demonstration on Nov. 5 and Dec. 3
from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.; and a Japanese pop culture festival on Nov. 13 from
11 a.m. - 3 p.m. For more information on these events, go to
indianamuseum.org.

With the exhibition, Contemporary Japanese Quilts, the Indiana State Museum
joins the two-year international celebration of the 150th anniversary of
U.S.-Japan relations. Hundreds of events are scheduled throughout the
country, from festivals and Haiku contests to the 2004 National Japan Bowl
and the National Cherry Blossom Parade. Please visit japanus150.org for
