I, too have enjoyed the rousing repartee on the issue of graduate degree
vs. experience. I am in complete agreement with those who suggest it is
a combination of professional training and practical experience that
make for the best potential hire. However, I'd like to add that I don't
consider my masters degree "just a piece of paper". While technically
the degree itself is a cellulose based product, what it represents is
far more important. It's a tangible reminder of the knowledge, skills,
and abilities I developed and honed during 1.5 years of hard work.

I went into my graduate program green, unseasoned and unschooled. I
came out with a body of technical knowledge and training I did not
possess before, skills I had only watched others exercise, a network of
industry professionals that has since proven indispensable, and a deeper
philosophical understanding of and appreciation for the importance of
material culture and the role of museums in its presentation. Other
by-products of my "piece of paper" include better honed history writing
and research skills (which I use daily), stronger critical thinking and
analytical skills, and solid presentation skills that came from
countless group projects presented (and defended) to my fellow students.

So, when I finally landed my first job 9 months after graduation (yup,
it was 9 months of resumes, cover letters, some interviews, some
rejection letters and lots of temp secretarial jobs until I landed that
job) I was confident in my abilities. My graduate school experience has
proven to be invaluable, and since that first job has been wonderfully
complimented by the practical experience and wisdom that on-the-job
training has given me.

To the author of the original posting: as this discussion has revealed,
the answers are relative to individual experience. Hope the discussions
have helped a bit. Years from now when you're asked the same question,
you'll have your answer ready.
