My mistake.  It was too broad a statement.  I meant "big name" contemporary
artists, ex. the likes of Rauschenburg, Oldenberg, Lichenstein, ... the ones
that are well represented in contemporary art museums.  Their copyright lawyers
are
advising against it.

You're right.  The web is a way for many artists to get their images
out into the public.  And there is alot of wonderful experimentation
happening now with the web.  It will be interesting to see what they/we
can do with interactive web authoring like Director/Shockwave and Java.
