Mary,

I like David's suggestions, but the central problem is that collections and
registration activities are very difficult to quantify in any meaningful
way. Exhibits, accessions, and inventorying can vary wildly from year to
year or month to month. There will be no "average" or mean, by which a
department can be easily gauged. You can look at the completion and
timetables for projects, seek to assess the thoroughness of the work, and
look at the condition of the collections and storage, but actually putting
useful numbers to anything will be very difficult, and very likely
counterproductive.

Personally I judge my success by how tired I am at the end of the day, and
by how much I intended to get done that had to wait for tomorrow. If I am
tired as heck and did not get everything done, then I have been a success.

Good luck.

Good Morning,

We are creating a performance matrix for our organization which will become
the measurement for success in given areas. Easily quantified are areas
such as programming, visitation and museum store sales have been included.
We are having difficulty figuring out how to create quantifiable indicators
of success for the collections department. Are there any organizations out
there who are able to do this?

Thank you,

Mary
