The latest issue of PC Computing magazine has a review of
digital cameras for under $1000.  There are about 20 listed
and they provide an in-depth comparison of features.

We're interested in purchasing a digital still camera in the
under-$1000
range.  It will be used primarily to take pictures of
artifacts and gift
shop items for use on our web site.
