Dear Nora:

The Association of Art Museum Directors which represents 170 of the largest art museums in the United States, can report that one-third of our member directors are women. You might want to read the August issue of Town and country magazine which has an article on women museum directors.

Hi Andy- I posted that, but I guess I should qualify my comment. My
experience has only been with major fine arts museums, so I can't
extrapolate that to ALL museums. While I've seen some assistant/deputy
directors posts filled by women, and yes, some directorships, it still seems
predominantly male. Do you have the numbers for major fine arts museums
(internationally)? Perhaps the membership of a group such as the Association
of Art Museum Directors would be telling? I don't know how many women are a
part of that group (which I believe is made up of the directors of the
leading 170 or so art museums in the US, Canada and Mexico). I'd be curious
to know the numbers for that sector of museums rather than "all accredited
institutions". If you have a breakdown of any statistics by museum-type, it
would be very interesting to see!
