Reference Librarian

The Japanese American National Museum is the first museum in the United
States expressly dedicated to sharing the experiences of Americans of
Japanese Ancestry.  The Museum currently seeks a Reference Librarian to
coordinate all public use of the Museum’s permanent, research, and
institutional collections through the public reading room of the National
Resource Center and to respond to requests received by mail, fax, e-mail,
and telephone.  The Reference Librarian will serve as the primary staff
member working with the public in the Reading Room of the Museum’s
National Resource Center and will assist the public in utilizing the
Museum’s extensive holdings of archival and manuscript collections,
printed materials, audio and visual materials, oral histories, moving
image collections, and vertical file materials

Responsibilities:  

* Staff the public reading room of the NRC and coordinate staff response
to reference inquiries received from off-site patrons.  Coordinate
scheduling of National Resource Center staff, student interns, and
volunteers to provide additional staff assistance in the Reading Room. 

* Coordinate the processing of license agreements, invoices, and other
documents as needed in response to patron requests 

* Participates in Museum-wide collection development activities with
primary responsibility for developing the Museum’s research collections
(e.g., printed materials, videos) within the context of the NRC collection
development policy

* Maintain and process all periodical subscriptions for the Museum 

* Monitors the physical condition of the NRC collections and reading room
space

* Creates access tools to facilitate patron use of the Museum’s 
collections and research materials

* Supervises student interns and volunteers who assist in the NRC reading
room and reference activities

* Participates in all NRC activities and in Museum projects as appropriate
 
Qualifications:

* M.L.S. or equivalent degree from an A.L.A. accredited institution. 
Relevant prior reference experience.  Thorough knowledge of library and
archival reference and access philosophy and practices.  Experience with
library acquisitions and collection development.  Demonstrated knowledge
of research and reference techniques as they apply to diverse users in a
public institution and the ability to apply them effectively to meet the
information needs of patrons.  Strong interest and ability in working with
the public; excellent interpersonal skills.  Familiarity with Japanese
American history and scholarship.  Americans of Asian ancestry are
strongly encouraged to apply. 

Starting salary: Low $30s, excellent benefits package.
