Melissa:

My new favorite delivery method for this kind of information is this:

take your text relating to a specific piece - perhaps a sentence or two, a
prompt, some questions - print it out nicely on cardstock.

Trim to the size you like, then laminate it.

Punch a hole in the corner and put it on your basic key ring.

Screw a cup hook into the wall nearest the painting in question, and hang
your prompt from the hook.

Costs next to nothing (lamination, a cup hook, and a key ring is less than
$2 each), easily handled, easily reproduced if it disappears, and you can
hang it at kid-level if you want. We've had none disappear, and people put
them back on the right hook every time, since the text relates only to the
painting you're standing in front of.

We currently have a loan exhibition of abstract painting (The Most Difficult
Journey, an ExhibitsUSA show) and we used the text they provided for a more
traditional gallery guide to produce these. We know people are sometimes
alarmed by Abstract Expressionist paintings, so I wanted to find a way to
get them to actually STOP and LOOK for a few minutes. We've been really
pleased with them and find people are using them.

I did not invent this idea, by the way, I stole...er, *borrowed* it, but I'm
not sure where I saw it first.
