Keeping in Touch! Communication and Correspondence in Early America,
1750-1860 - Without cell phones, telephones or e-mail, how did early
Americans maintain long distance contacts? Exploring the "no tech" ways
people managed to
send messages, keep abreast of the latest news, conduct business, and
maintain connections with distant family and friends are the topics of an
upcoming symposium sponsored by the Fairfax County Park Authority and the
Department
of History at George Mason University. The program will be presented on
Friday, March 30, 2001, at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

Actress Kathy Foit Sewell (Ad Lib Productions) portrays an 18th century
postmistress, Jeffrey L. Brodie (National Postal Museum) surveys the growth
of America's postal system, John Michael Vlach (George Washington
University)
explores the narrative messages in quilts, Leigh Ryan (University of
Maryland) looks at the conventions of letter writing, and Tara Gleason
(Winterthur Museum)
investigates the tools and material culture of written communication.
Tabletop demonstrations and exhibits of quill pen making and writing,
papermaking, letter
sealing, antique writing equipment and other related interpretive activities
will accompany the program.

Registrations must be postmarked by March 16, 2001. The registration fee of
$50.00 covers all sessions of the symposium, parking and lunch. For
information
and registration forms write to the Collections Manager, Fairfax County Park
Authority, 12055 Government Center Parkway, Suite 927, Fairfax, Virginia,
