I. Looters of Ancient Art: A detective story
On Thursday, September 29 at the LGBT Community Center, 208 West 13th
Street, New York, NY. 7 8:30 pm
Nonmembers $10. Members of Out Professionals or SAFE, $7.

SAFE and Out Professionals <http://www.outprofessionals.org/> present Roger
Atwood <http://www.savingantiquities.org/j-safe-stealinghistory.htm#about>
in conversation with Brendan Lemon, Editor-in-Chief of Out magazine, and
Brendan Lemon.

Roger Atwood, author of Stealing History: Tomb Raiders, Smugglers, and the
Looting of the Ancient World, has spent years studying the market for stolen
objects, from the moment they are dug out of the earth until they become
encased in museums or placed on the auction block. In STEALING HISTORY,
Atwood documents how the antiquities trade has become a streamlined,
efficient industry that is slowly tapping out the last physical remains of
ancient civilizations around the world.

Since being appointed editor-in-chief of Out in April 2000, Brendan Lemon
has helped restore the magazine's status as a leading voice in gay
journalism. At The New Yorker from 1989 to 1997, Lemon served
editor-in-chief Robert Gottlieb as the head of the magazine's Goings On
About Town section, and Tina Brown as both cultural editor and Talk of the
Town editor. The author of "Last Night," a novel, he is also the American
theatre critic for the Financial Times and a frequent contributor to the New
York Times.

treasures from northern Peru) and some not well-known at all (pieces from
Batán Grande, which he discusses in the book). The whole tour lasts about
an-hour- and-a-half.

SAFE Tours are $30 ($24 for members, $10 for students with valid ID) per
person, plus group admission to the museum.
